The auntie series is a homage to women we learn from morally and visually. I've always had a admiration for my older cousin Sabrina and my aunt Tiffany - beautiful, incredibly stylish, funny as all hell women who danced to the beat of their own drum. As a wardrobe stylist and visual artist I experimented with the combination of using textiles, wear and style cues as my medium. My subjects were the canvas - beautiful empowered creative women of color, artists, film makers, vessels. It was a honor to shoot Mie with child, the essence of all life is creation. Giving, wise, expressive women of thought honoring our ancestral duty to pass down knowledge, stories, warnings amongst each other. Eromommen, Myra, Alima, Mie ( baby Enzo arrived two days later ) and Mereba. Photographer Kayla Reefer was a dream to collaborate on this series with. Not only is she incredibly kind and directed beautifully knowing the slight gentle body movements that made every shoot flow with gentle ease. Her ability to capture human moments and emotion is why I was honored to have her as a collaborator.
We used random satin remnants I sourced as a homage to the night ritual of wearing satin bonnets and pillowcases to protect our hair, our crowning glory for the draping. The intent was for the satin to envelop and touch the subject in a protective way but bright and royal in the fashion of a vintage glamour shot. I utilize slow fashion as a part of my styling work and in this piece I knotted satin and sheet fabric remnants into clothing items and mixed them with vintage/thrift clothing and shoes. Hand cut gloves are by Wing and Weft out of New York City.
Special thank you to Mario Horne, set shaman and fashion angel.
